Xbox 360 vs. PS3: this is closer to maxing out?
What does really mean maxing a console? Is still maxed out the 360? How about the PS3? Now to my point: have you noticed that each year some game developer has announced that their upcoming game "out the console maxed has", but still look like play and one better performance every year? It is not much point, can we agree on this. Not yet, never in players in one einziehenraserei get such comments. It works. But wait a minute! They have the same thing a year ago say? An old, well used, but great quote by Naughty Dog is here to answer my questions:
"Every developer who a"Percent of system used"answer is blowing smoke." The truth is that each developer uses 100% of the systems on each game. Some get only more 100% than others. And game after game, we all get more systems than we on the previous title.Think of it this way. If the system you some a glass casting developer rocks to the glass overflows and then call, the it is terminated. She would claim that they use 100% of space systems. And it is true that no more stones fit. Some become too many in a rock and the game playing slowly or fun runs. But there is still some space left for smarter developers. Pour links from the rocks stones in the cracks, and get more into the glass. Then they call it 100% full. But some developers will then pour in the sand to fill the cracks between the pebbles. You get even more out of the system, but it is only 100% full. Some developers go the extra distance, and casting in water. Then, the glass is really full, right? Sure, but only for this title, because some of the rocks are replaced can with pebbles, the same thing to do, if you work hard. And some of the pebbles in sand can be made. And some sand press can, water. Non-developers always a glass is filled with only water, no developer has the time, so that non-developers really fills the glass
"We received only more and more the 100%."
So it is at the end not a question, you have used makes how much system, but how efficiently you use it (that's what she said...). Hardware is not always better on the 360/PS3/Wii, but know how to write code of optimal use set running hardware resources will be improved. , The being said, if you hear people claiming "Killzone uses 3 100% of the PS3 power" or "No other engine can handle Crysis 2", stop, take a deep breath and don't think that the hype. Resist the marketing jargon. Maybe true, maybe the hype machine their title is "100% of the system", but keep in mind that this is an empty statement and encoding can always be improved. Judge game/graphics for themselves if the game is actually released.
One last thing to think, about the hypothetical situation where all code completely is optimized on a console... so really "maxing out a console." Over time on this gene, I expect developers this goal closer. I Killzone 4 Killzone 3, Crysis, Crysis 2, Gears of war expect 3 gears of war 2 and uncharted 3 uncharted 2 Excel Excel Excel Excel. But as a developer this hypothetical limit approaching, the improvements are evolutionary, not revolutionary. I suspect that developers are now very close. For example, you expect something to beat uncharted 2 out of the water (although the hype machines are in full force at the moment of...), even if it it upwards. Also remember that in this hypothetical situation, limited resources between things such as resolution, AI, frame rate, textures it would, lighting, effects, sound, etc. to spread. A game may very well be tops in graphics... but at the expense of other elements. And we all know that graphics are not everything.
Now that we have learned all something (hopefully), or at least a refresher, had finally with a controversial question: which console do you think closer to is "maxed out," is the 360 or PS3?
My opinion is that the Xbox 360 close is maxed out. Why? Because historically it simple console for to develop. Architecture for the 360 was easier, wrap heads around, and thus developers it had more early progress on the 360, was closer to "maxing" and optimization code earlier in their life. I would argue that history supports this view, since the average early multiplatform title edge graphics performance / had on the 360. Developers struggled early on with the PS3 (above all, multi-platform), so they were close to maxing out. Plus, it is my subjective opinion, that first party titles on the 360 in the years when compared to PS3 first party titles, so suggesting that optimization on the 360 closer than the PS3 may be less progress have made code. Remember, 1st party exclusive games really should be the benchmark for the State of the art coding at any time.
Take to salt in the wounds of the 360, I predict also that as soon as we approach the hypothetical point of 100% code optimization ("true maxing out") on the 360 and PS3, you will find that PS3 total numbers game are impressive games in the. Why? Although the 360 GPU is displayed, the stronger of the two, looks is the cell processor of the PS3 have more headroom than the 360... at least as far as theoretical number crunching. So, the PS3 due to the pure hardware overhead should win situation in both cases, assuming a hypothetical optimal encoding. People have predicted this for years.
But can be... Things slow down are not so easy. So why are the 360/PS3 games yet at comparable levels in these days? As already mentioned, I would argue that the PS3 in code optimization when compared to the 360 is lagging (not so party AAA very title in 1st) in relation to the theoretical "assembled from" border of the console. The 360 is not fully optimised either, but it is again closer to this limit... I think. How close? I know not... and only when we manage things better not think it, I am sure that programmers surprised us all much smarter than I. But again, if the PS3 due to hardware... win hypothetical optimal encoding in both cases, should eventually. The big question is, how long it takes to get to at this time of the optimization? I suspect we will see, a new Xbox (and Shorlty after PS4) before either console is allowed full "max out."
