RIM: Bernstein sees slowing earnings overseas-Barron's (blog)

AnalystSanford Bernstein Pierre ferragu today reiterated an Underperform rating on shares of Research in Motion (RIMM), writing"BlackBerry a brand", and that the benefits of growth in sales abroad starts to go away.

RIM Ferragu expects to report "a good quarter" when it becomes 4th fiscal quarter results this Thursday, after the market close. The forecast for the first fiscal quarter will probably also be positive, thinks. Ferragu is modeling 5.7 billion turnover, at the high end of the forecast of RIM for 5,5 billion at 5.7 billion.

However, for the entire year, he sees $ 23.4 billion, below the consensus of $ 23.8 billion. Based on surveys conducted by Bernstein and a company called Crowd sciencelast year, Ferragu believes only 43% of BlackBerry owners would stick with a BlackBerry than moving to another platform of phone, compared to 92% of iPhone owners of Apple (AAPL) and 87% of the Googleowners (GOOG) "Android"-based phones.

In addition, growth overseas (i.e., outside North America) 98% of RIM may slow as parts of the story reveal: he sees "buyers first" in Europe, which have been moving to smartphones, becoming less of a force as "buyer's market for the first time is mechanically set to smartphone users ridursie as they become more experienced." RIM "momentum" in Europe is already under HTC and of Samsung (SSNLF), he believes.

HTC and other manufacturers can predict "ramp up" cheap Android phones that will challenge RIM in this segment of the market abroad, which he believes. "We expect EPS to peak this year at $ 6.31 and in the context of declining earnings, beyond fiscal year 2012," concludes Ferragu.

RIM shares are up $ 1.36, or 2 percent, to $ 62.27.

Mitel adds video presence to desktop clients-ITWorld Canada

With organizations becoming increasingly testing the use of videoconferencing, Mitel Networks Inc. has made it easy to launch desktop point-to-point video from your client application.

Ottawa-based company said Monday that unified Communicator Advanced 4.0, its desktop client now shows video presence within an enterprise, enabling connectivity with just one click. Availability display as an icon next to the name of a person's small camera.

The idea, said Riendeau Brooks, a manager of Mitel solutions is that it "puts video to the user's fingertips."

UCA 4. 0 adds what Mitel calls "context" for video calls, which is the ability to send a pop-up message to text you want to have someone with video call and explain why you want to connect instead of having to call them.

This accompanies the previous ability to send messages to the context for voice calls.

Another client's main improvement is the ability to show the presence of Microsoft Office Communications Server (OCS) and Lotus Sametime. Until now the UCA had only telephony connectivity between these applications.

"Organizations that have invested heavily in OCS or Sametime have a path that can go forward with for best of breed" system of communication including Mitel, Riendeau said.

Connectivity presence with the new Microsoft Lync will later this year with an update, he added.

Finally dispersed early UC server now can be linked through peering, which increases the scalability up to 10,000 users.

For users of smartphones, Mobile UC Advanced is limited to Blackberry by Research In Motion. However, Riendeau said customers for Apple iPhone and Android devices are coming this year.

Meanwhile, the customer is free to BlackBerry has been improved by giving organizations the ability to provide pathways for UC users avanzata. Taking advantage of the presence and GPS capabilities, which leaves the user's BlackBerry status change as they move. For example, a status "in Office" move mobile calls to fixed phone, while "home office" might allow only voice but not instant messages.

What is integration of the client with a list of native BlackBerry contacts. Previously the mobile UC client linked to business contacts, but the change now allows users to initiate calls from personal contacts at the level of the PBX, cutting down phone charges.

Riendeau would not say if or when Mitel Customer tablet PC should, other than noting the company is a strategic partner of Research In Motion.

RIM is about to release its Tablet Playbook.

RIM, carriers battling on Mobile payment strategies-paidContent.org

Stalled negotiations on how best to implement the promising NFC (near field communications) wireless payment technology in research in Motion BlackBerry phones confirms the age-old battle between the hardware manufacturer and wireless carrier is still alive and kicking.

The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday that RIM (NSDQ: RIMM) and three major carriers — Rogers, AT&T (NYSE: T) and T-Mobile — are having a row over how it should fit on a single chip NFC devices. The chip, which would let users of the phone to pay for goods and services simply by swiping their phone near a reader wireless, Show a lot of promise towards reaching the goal of mobile portfolio and I have been talking a lot from Google (NSDQ: GOOG) in recent months.

See more of our most recent coverage of Apple
or add a warning to cover the future of Apple.

But as with many things, the dispute boils down to control which, according to the report. RIM wants the NFC chip embedded in the device itself, where claims that can be more secure. Wireless operators that is built into removable SIM card of the phone where users could swap into another phone. The real difference is that I would check payments: RIM could set your BlackBerry payment archive, while the carrier would be part of mobile payments of your monthly Wireless Bill, with each taking a cut from merchants.

Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) is probably thinking the same way that RIM, which might explain the conflicting reports in recent weeks, more or less the next iPhone would come with a NFC chip. Google is believed to be working on their own NFC service that presumably is being tested in some markets.

RIM affects E-mail demands of India-Wall Street Journal

NEW DELHI — an Executive of BlackBerry-maker Research in Motion Ltd. said that Indian security agencies are doing "pretty amazing" requests for more powers to monitor email and other data traffic, raise serious privacy issues that threaten to damage the reputation of the country with foreign investors.

Robert Crow, vice President, relations between industry and Government to the brink, said India's Home Ministry, which oversees internal security, wants the ability to intercept any communication in real time on any Indian network — including BlackBerry highly secure corporate e-mail service — and get into readable, plain text format.

This large raises the question whether the Government considers that any communication is legally off-limits, said, including foreign ambassadors conversations e-mail and financial records that get transmitted over secure telecommunications networks for Indian outsourcing company.

"Connect the dots and you're saying, ' Holy smokes, '" Mr. Crow said during an interview ".This statement is made in an environment where we don't really read the privacy statements or other content or data — and where we have a rather poor record keeping administrative things, such as wiretaps secret. "

Showroom of Bloomberg News to BlackBerry in New Delhi. India wants more surveillance of e-mail.

A spokesman for India's Home Ministry refused to comment. Government officials in India have said they want to ensure suspected terrorists and criminals cannot evade government surveillance using newfangled communication technologies. Under the current Indian Act, the Home Secretary — the top bureaucrat in the Ministry Home — authorizes all telecom surveillance from Central Government agencies for 60 days at a time.

For several months, RIM has addressed requests from India to give agencies a way to access the encrypted messages to the service of corporate e-mail BlackBerry. BlackBerry has repeatedly said the system is designed in such a way that does not have the "keys" to unlock messages users — and refused to change its architecture technology in any of the 175 countries where it offers the service.

Mr. Crow said he is heartened by India, at least, that no longer seems to be RIM's discovery. India has made, he said, that other advanced services — such as virtual private networks, or VPNS, and messaging services, peer-to-peer are outside of its surveillance.

It is not clear if the Indian Government has set no deadline for when it should access the BlackBerry Enterprise-e-mail and other services and if it would take the drastic measure to stop the services that are not compatible with. Indian media reports have said that the Government has said the Indian telecommunications operators to submit plans by March 31, showing how they would accommodate the needs of security agencies. But the Government has not made any announcement.

Mr. Crow said that telecom Ministry is optimistic that India, which is beginning to assert more authority in this area, will have a better understanding of the technological constraints and RIM faces a solution to the problem that does not require the BlackBerry to compromise user privacy. A spokesman for the Ministry-telecom refused to comment.

But Mr. Crow said he expects talks with India to drag on, given the inherent delays in democracy in the country and the lack of clearly defined regulations on data protection and privacy.

"I think this can go on and on in India, and frankly it will be one of those things that people talk to the Indian business environment — one that won't be seen in favor of India in international comparison," said Mr. Crow.

BlackBerry, which touts the nature of its highly secure email service as an essential point of sale worldwide, has faced growing demands from foreign Governments for access to the service, in recent months. At stake is particularly high in India since the country has more than 770 million wireless subscribers who have just started to move from ordinary phones to smartphones like the BlackBerry.

Mr. Crow said that he has proposed ways to the intelligence and security agencies in India to advance investigations without accessing the actual content of messages encrypted e-mail BlackBerry. Telecom operators can derive the so-called meta-data about messages, like messages were sent, and the corporate mail server went through, he said.

"If that model of communication were known to the authorities, for legitimate reasons," said Mr. Crow, "then the authorities would be able to go to the correct business entity that owns the server" and pursue their investigation of a suspect.

In January, RIM fixed the security issues of India with the BlackBerry Messenger chat service, which uses a lower level of corporate e-mail encryption. The company has given Indian Telecom operators, a system that allows them to key in the phone number of a suspect and gets unscrambled versions of Messenger chat, when he was provided a legal system, said Mr. Crow.

Mr. Crow says on potential plans to expand in India, where it already has a data center and where software developers are making around 11,000 programs to run on BlackBerry RIM is "kick the tires". A chance down the line is for India to manufacture some of the thousand different parts that go into a BlackBerry.

"There is a heck of a lot of demand [BlackBerry] within three or four hours flying time of most production sites in India including India itself," he said.

India says that rim Messenger remedy unsatisfactory-Reuters Italy

NEW DELHI/TORONTO (Reuters)-Indian security agencies are not satisfied with a plan offered by Research In Motion for them to have access to data about its services, BlackBerry Messenger, junior Telecoms Minister Sachin Pilot told Parliament on Wednesday.

RIM gave India access to its consumer-oriented services, including the Messenger service in January after the Indian authorities have raised safety concerns, but could not allow monitoring of its company email, he said.

RIM said it believed the pilot's written reply to a parliamentary question "may have been inadvertently prepared using outdated information" and was confident in his plan was proper and above those offered by rivals, including Nokia.

Can Android take BlackBerry Government work? -GCN.com

Google device brings smart-phone market, but weaknesses are in the way of Government adoptionThe most recent numbers in the smartphone wars, and they are telling the consequences for how government employees are to interact with each other — along with those responsible for the Agency and the public — in the near future.

In a report released on 8 March, the research firm comScore said total market share of Android smart phones, powered by the Google mobile OS, had surpassed the share of the market for Research in Motion BlackBerry with a clear margin.

Between October 2010 and February 2011, comScore reported, BlackBerry lost 5 percentage points in the global market of smart-phone, from 35.8% to 30.4%. Meanwhile, Android gained nearly eight percentage points — from 23.5% to 31.2 per cent.

If you are a federal employee and I wonder why should you care about some decimal points of market share, it is because the displacement marks the emergence of a technology that is likely to be a standard setter for social and professional communication in the Government for years.

It's a model that has played out many times before.

Consumers go wild about a product, and penetrates the commercial enterprise, through the Office of the Chief Executive. When government employees are starting to use them for quasiprofessional purposes, uses the penalties management agency limited, acceptable use policies are written to the end and the technology becomes firmly implanted in the workforce.

It happened with the BlackBerry, as happened with Facebook, it happened with Twitter — which became commonly used technologies in the public sector.

Android horizon

Even so, even if Android is increasing, it has a long way to go before it lets you consolidate that position. So far, no federal agency has officially supported the popular phone. But that is changing, say the program managers and market analysts. Could not happen immediately, but Android will eventually permeate the Community Government, they say.

Existing barriers for Android are the traditional ones for emerging technologies: the lack of strong security and enterprise device management. Even if RIM has handles well, Android doesn't. It is no coincidence therefore that one of the major smart-phone exploit malware first hit the Android ecosystem was before.

At the beginning of March, a batch of 58 applications have been found to contain malware, called DroidDream, designed to take delivery of a smart phone and create a mobile botnet. When downloaded, the exploit of DroidDream — known as "rageagainstthecage" — would get access to the Android kernel and take control of permissions on the phone. Would then download an application for managing tasks that would make it impossible to remove both programs.

Eyes on RIM interview exclusive server cloud, keep-Reuters

By Alastair Sharp

TORONTO, March 16 (Reuters)-Research In Motion (RIM.) Has great plans to make a better use of its nerve centre of computers but not open servers for BlackBerry devices so soon, a Senior Executive said on Wednesday.

The company, in which BlackBerry smartphones are the default device that a company gives its workforce for mobile communications, is confident that he has an edge even as companies increasingly allow workers to bring rival products.

RIM is due to launch its tablet computer PlayBook this month or next and expects strong Takeup from companies already accustomed to its smartphone.

"Our strength lies in what businesses want to get more mobile ... we are pure in that pursuit," said Jim Tobin, senior Vice President of RIM software and business services.

RIM's devices are favorites offices due in part to on-site BlackBerry Enterprise Server that connect directly to the back-end systems for corporate e-mail and other data and manage who gets to see it when outside the Office.

Some critics question whether the Canadian company would be better served by transforming servers into generic handler that enables to handle Apple's (AAPL.O) iPhones and iPads and a slew of devices that use Google (GOOG.Or android software).

"Our response now is that we don't need to do this," Tobin said in an interview.

"That does not close the door before bridging out into other things, but it is not the right focus for us now."

Instead, Tobin said that RIM soon will offer cloud-based services equal to the offering server and tightly integrated with Microsoft (MSFT.O) own cloud-based effort, Office 365. Cloud computing in General refers to services hosted in the data center remotely accessible via the Internet.

"We have the physical ability to manage cloud services," Tobin said, referring to the border existing datacenters that move some 15 million gigabytes of BlackBerry traffic per month.

The comments echo similar sentiments of cloud by Hewlett-Packard (HPQ.N) Leo Apotheker, who this week has been the focal point of his vision for the company. [ID: nN14172680] HP plans to launch its WebOS-based Tablet Pad in June.

Tobin said RIM's videoconferencing capability PlayBook was built using open standards that should be able to work with other platforms, but refused to say if a user PlayBook would be able to interact with someone through a consumer product like Skype or Google Gchator software company like Cisco (CSCO.O) and Microsoft.
