As Ray Sansom case opens, vigorous defense denies accusations-silncioerudoasatiraemdenisdiderot.blogspot.com

By Alex Leary, writer times
Former House speaker Ray Sansom, confers on the left, with his lawyer, Steve Dobson, in Tallahassee on Monday, first day of his trial.

TALLAHASSEE — with his one-time colleagues working in the Capitol building across the street, former House speaker Ray Sansom went on trial Monday for his role in an alleged scheme to build an airplane hangar for a developerhis lawyer, a charge denied vehemently.

Opening statements highlighted the crux of the case, which has been two years in the making: did Sansom sneak $ 6 million in the budget under false pretenses, in effect, stealing taxpayers, or he was doing a public service, providing funding for a building that could be used by emergency officials in his hometown of Destin during a storm?

"When all the dust settles," Leon County Attorney Willie Meggs said the jury, of course, "what is this building is predominantly an aircraft hangar.

Sansom's lawyer, Steve Dobson said there is "no question" developer Jay Odom wanted to use the building at Destin airport, but he said Sansom had no role in planning since the money was appropriated in 2007.

He said pointedly the jury that it was "perfectly legal and appropriate" to Sansom use education dollars, adding it was a practice of senior legislators to enter home projects in the budget.

Dobson "this happened long time immortal in the legislature," he said.

Sansom, R-Destin and Odom were charged with grand theft and conspiracy to commit grand theft. A third co-defendant, former Northwest Florida State College President Bob Richburg, agreed to testify against the two men in exchange for the charges being dropped against him.

Drama of the day was more than the trial began, almost two years since Sansom, Odom and Mcconnells were accused first of what was said. Both sides are arguing the central points for months in pre-trial Court battles.

Still, with a jury in Court, bets were obvious and opening instructions provide a roadmap of how the two sides will continue in the next week or more.

Meggs brought the jury through the genesis of airport construction, showing how Odom once tried to get funding from the State through the city of Destin. Went nowhere. But in the same year, Sansom place the money in the budget State for a building in the same location.

The Prosecutor said he would use e-mail and other records (in a computer point Richburg was taken to court, wrapped in red tape marked "evidence") to show the projects were the same, which Sansom and Odom cooperated and that plans were changed after the St. Petersburg Times began to ask questions.

"A cover-up ensued after a light was shone on this particular project," said Meggs.

In late afternoon, Destin town Manager Greg Kisela testified that there never was an attempt to get funding for an emergency operations centre at the airport before the involvement of Odom.

Kisela also testified that he went to Odom in 2007 and asked about the budget request (the one that went nowhere, because these types of projects sponsored by the legislature were banned in 2007 due to a poor State of economy). "He said he would not be next lease request and basically he would be repackaged as an educational resource," said Kisela.

Meggs says is evidence of an attempt to hide the project.

Time ran out before the Defense could cross-examine Kisela; What will happen when the trial continues at 9 a.m. today.

Sansom 48 years of age, since one of the most powerful men in the State legislature, sat silently by his lawyer throughout the day, although he nodded in agreement with the points in your favor. To reinforce the image of family man of Sansom, his wife and two of his daughters sat behind him.

Odom took a few seats away, and he and Sansom did not make eye contact.

Sansom smiled when circuit judge Terry Lewis, business preventively before jurors were seated, seemed inclined to limit evidence about the work that took in Northwest Florida Sansom State College on the same day he was sworn in as speaker in November 2008. It was this work that first raised questions about Sansom's budget appropriations.

On the other hand, Lewis appeared likely to allow evidence that 2009 Sansom, landed a job as an insurance agent that should money Odom and told investigators he hoped its debt would be "smaller."

Sansom and Odom has an experienced team of Defense and they were well prepared Monday. The lawyers said they would present numerous witnesses who would have appreciated an emergency operations centre at the Airport (despite what some officials say counties) and that the project would have actually been directly beneficial to Odom had crossed the legislator as initially requested.

As Sansom had a "responsibility" to seek money for projects worth, said his lawyer, Odom was entitled as "American" and a "Floridian" to seek the help of elected officials, lawyer Jimmy Judkins said.

"We present to you that by the end of the case, the evidence is overwhelming that he is not guilty of stealing money and he is not guilty of conspiring to steal money and that his verdict will not be guilty of two charges" Judkins said.

Expect software solutions for Apple TV and 2011 MacBook Pro graphics bugs-CNET (blog)

In Apple's latest round of software and hardware releases got the second generation Apple TV a software update to add more features for HDMI support, AirPlay and surround sound for Netflix movies; However, along with the update a number of people found that their televisions began to flicker, especially if they were using HDMI to DVI adapters.

More recently, is Apple's updated line of MacBook Pro systems an error profiled on MacRumors and discussed in great length on this Apple discussion board thread, where the systems are to stop responding (hang) when under heavy load occurred. Although the machines seem to be carried out, it seems the input to them to be frozen, so users cannot do, and eventually forces the system to restart.

These machines have new hardware in them, including four-core CPUs and brand new Thunderbolt i/o technology, and it is possible there may be a bug in the firmware or software drivers for these new features, which can lead to the problem. The same applies for the Apple TV problems, which is clearly a software problem because they are happening with the latest updates started.

In both situations, have Apple representatives said that they are aware of the problem and working on a fix, which in the form of a software update in the near future to come. In the meantime, if you have problems with these new machines are experiencing consider some potential solutions you can try.

For the Apple TV, you can use an alternate connection to your television to try if you have a DVI to HTMI adapter, but this seems to be the only fix that so far has worked for people.

For the new MacBook Pro is the problem is probably in your display drivers, since most of the crashes are happening when people graphics options in different programs or graphics intensive applications such as games or CAD software. In these cases would you try to start and run your system in safe mode (hold down the SHIFT key at startup) to see if that can be done without the potential for the crash. In addition, you can try the graphics settings in the programs that you use to see if that helps reduce the problem.

In terms of the graphics in the new systems, there may be a problem with the use of the discrete graphics card or with switch technologies. Either way, you can try to test the problem by installing "gfxCardStatus," that a tool that can force the system to use only one GPU and thus prevent automatic switching or the use of a GPU. Try different setups of the GPU with this tool to see if you can avoid the problem.

Finally, an option you could try is formatting the hard disk and reinstalling the operating system. Although the issue is addressed by the engineers at Apple, in the past, some problems have happened due to defective original install, and are resolved by reinstalling the operating system.

Regardless of what you do, make sure you have regular backups of your data to avoid losing your work, and lets hope Apple issues a fix soon. It seems that the engineers work hard to do this.

UPDATE: Apple has released OS X 10.6.7, which focuses on this graphical bug in the new 2011 MacBook Pro systems. The update should be available via Software Update, but can also be downloaded as a manual update of this Web page. Make sure your system completely back up before you apply this update.

Live GFW Live & Xbox to gain new features? -TeamXbox

CVG broke a story about Microsoft?s of possible plans for the ?Games for Windows Live? service and how it can interact at some point in the future with the Xbox 360. An internal three-minute presentation by Microsoft surfaced on YouTube today already and we are here to break it for you.

The video features Xbox Live avatars perform various tasks from gaming activities to productivity. The video explains that Microsoft is of the view that if users they offered information about social networks and instant release be limited Shouldn?t on a single platform. Other information give the idea that a User?s avatar is their ?digital Identity? slides in your presentation. Microsoft sees a future in the avatars on the Web, Xbox 360, and search (bing?) are available.

The avatars of the presentation be seen swiping their hands, new clothes, the access to the friends list with a Kinect type user interface and play select with each other. The presentation concludes with the story ?The future of PC gaming is upon us. Is the question who will lead and will be the consequences? ?

While no specific initiatives in the short video announced it is quite clear, that Microsoft sold a vision of the future where the Windows PC and Xbox 360 closer relations. Games for Windows Live would be replaced with an Xbox 360-like interface that allows for cross-platform game and Kinect controls?

The video raises more questions than it answered. You want to use avatar your Xbox 360 as your ?digital Identity? for Microsoft Windows, Bing, and online gaming? Personally I have been a few times not satisfied with games for Windows Live, I've used it. While easier, you give it messages to contacts from a keyboard on the PC, I find the connection to the LIVE on the PC Isn?t as stable.

Let your voice about this possible vision be heard a connected Xbox 360/PC World in our section "Comments".

The man behind Google Docs on the opportunities in the cloud - Reuters

Jonathan Rochelle, 47, knows what Google can do for a small business. As leader of the group for Google Docs product, it is responsible for the development of some software to small businesses most innovative of the giant of the Internet. Google Docs is a spreadsheet Web company he started and sold to Google in 2005. Rochelle also plays an advisory role to the discrete process of Google for the acquisition of the startups.

We spoke with la Rochelle for his advice for the use of Web tools - in your small business and what it takes to get noticed by a business more cools the world. Here are excerpts of our conversation edited.

Contractor: Many small businesses are not taking full advantage of cloud computing, despite its low cost and a greater convenience. Why?
Rochelle: There is still a lack of awareness on the difference between the computer and installed software locally clouds. With cloud computing, that you can access your documents from anywhere, you don't get a new computer. If you open an Office and you have three employees, there is always a traditional approach to the purchase of three computers and networking at all. With cloud computing, you will necessarily need to buy new computers or their network. Instead, everyone can use their own computers and access to the shared online documents. The old approach will change, but there is a legacy that is making it difficult. One of the things holding computer Web return to become dominant is the plateau. You don't go in a store to buy. People don't know where to go to "buy" cloud computing.

Contractor: What are some tips for small businesses to buy cloud-based software?
Rochelle: After other companies who are using proven solutions is one of the most important things. And, don't use combinations of programs that don't fit well together. So, where you can, you want to paste with a unique company that offers most of what you are looking for. In addition, do not try to match the product exactly to your processes. It's really expensive. If you are ready to change your process somewhat to correspond to a technology that has trusted and credible and working, you can save even more money. It should be little pain to change your process so that you use standard technology.

Contractor: What opportunities business you see for potential entrepreneurs of software?
Rochelle: Niche applications. Management software through a movement of the platform on the Web. As this occurs, all prior software can be re-questioned. There are opportunities for the guy who wrote the application that contributes to a dentist's Office, the guy who wrote the application that you run your hardware, or contributes to a journalist be more effective. The greatest opportunity is offering the best software in these classes of niche on the new Web platform. Web-based software are much cheaper for buyers that traditional software and programmers can be much more innovative, it is useful for a contractor to say, OK, we'll start from scratch.

Contractor: When sizing for potential acquisitions for Google, what you look for - something unique?
Rochelle: We are certainly looking for a kind of secret sauce that it would be difficult for us to start from scratch, but the team is probably the most important thing. People should be passionate about what they do. It is the driver.

Contractor: Tips on the best way to show that you have a good idea and the right team?
Rochelle: Not to present what you think of the buyer or the partner wants to hear. It is just a bad thing to do. A completely honest conversation about where you are directed is a must.

Contractor: How Google come to acquire your business?
Rochelle: In 2003, I was running a business, I started called ITK Solutions that created the management software for major financial services companies. Financial spreadsheets were kind of a little magic, because they gave the business people who were not of the technicians of the ability to deliver cool, automated things like complex formulas, graphics and lots of data. But spreadsheets were inherently locked in a box-, they were on a desktop computer. My partner Farzad "Fuzzy" Khosrowshahi found this idea of conversion from a spreadsheet Web code. There was a very specific financial model at the time where we estimated would take about six months to put on the Web. But he was able to convert a worksheet code in the code on the Web in almost no time. This time, we knew that we were in business together.

Contractor: You addressed Google immediately?
Rochelle: Step exactly. At the same time, we have someone we knew contacted for some tips on one of our other products. And it turns out, it is to Google. Therefore, we define a meeting, but not with the intent to sell. In fact, it is very clear that our product was not something that Google was interested in, but he was happy to help us, on a personal level. So he looked at the concept, we drew pictures of the Board of Directors for him, and it was a good conversation. But not good enough.

If we then showed him the fuzzy logic produces our Web worksheet prototype. And he literally fired computer laptop away. He tried a few complex formulas. And he said, "Wow, this thing works." And then he said: "I changed my mind." I think that interested Google. "And, from this moment, it turns into a conversation about the acquisition.

Protect your privacy: search the Web-PCWorld

When browsing the Web, it's as if you have a lot of companies were allowed them to implant a tracking device in his hand and a small camera, recording, where to go and how. Thanks to the advertising networks, search engines, ISPS and social network, your online activities are monitored, analysed, and sells. But it's a few things that you maintain a certain degree of privacy.

Advertising networks

The risk of: advertising networks, such as DoubleClick, Quantcast, Microsoft, Yahoo!, and still others use different techniques to know of pages that you visit and the ads to respond to. They do so in order to precisely target ads, see.

The most common way is by using a tracking cookie, Web bug (small picture or part of the code, which refers back to the advertising network servers and Sets or reads a cookie). Each cookie contains a unique code that identifies your Web browser; in combination with specific information sent by the Web bug, "says the ad network, which Web sites and pages you visit. (These cookies are different from those sites, they watch you locally or retain preference settings).

Tracking cookies are just one ad networks use technology to track the activities. And these networks can only follow you in the event that you visit the Web sites that are participating in the programmes. But because nearly every site now displays advertisements and some advertising networks, can watch and record a considerable part of your use of the Internet.

In the theory of network advertising cookies are anonymous; They monitor your browser, not you personally. However, it may be compared to your name, using things like your IP address. Right now, it's more frightening than dangerous. But after the road, they tied the cookies to you more personally relevant and is used to edit things like prices on products.

Are initiatives to stop or curtail this free-for-all: currently the account disable advertising firms, and other online businesses from the monitoring and the sharing of your personal information is being examined in the context of the US House of representatives and the popular browsers like Firefox and Chrome to experiment with "What is the track" in the framework of their respective applications. Unfortunately, how these strategies are still in early beta, negotiation, and still you must use a more thorough defense protection.

How to protect yourself: mail protection from monitoring-not-track settings in the browser and even the laws mandating not-track registers in motion are the strokes. But as long as such measures to obtain some muscles, you can choose from a large monitoring network by visiting the Network Advertising Initiative Opt-Out page. This industry run Web site checks the system for the tracking cookies from participating advertising networks and allows you to opt-out of one or all at once. It does this by setting the "monitor" cookies, which many business networks. Don't forget to visit this web site on each browser you are using.

The next step is to block cookies from third parties and advertising pages. In Safari's Preferences by > security > accept cookies. Click the check box next to "only from sites I visit" to protect. Firefox go to the Privacy tab in the preferences, select the use custom settings for history from the Firefox Will drop-down and annul the accept cookies from third parties.

You can also use your browser's private browsing mode. Private browsing in Safari (Safari > Private Browsing) is not very efficient, since it still stores the cookies. Firefox (Tools > discretion) imposes less, but still allows you to monitor for a given session, and to stop tracking by IP address.

If you want to really browse under the radar, you will need to install additional Browser Plugins. If you want to start, I recommend Safari AdBlock and AdBlock Plus for Firefox. These supplements to block most of Internet advertising and all embedded monitoring. But they don't want to stop all the monitor. If you want to further strengthen its defense, install the Ghostery for Firefox, Safari or chrome; blocks Web bugs, tracking tags and other methods to monitor more than 200 companies.

Really if you want complete control over your browser, try NoScript for Firefox (best browser security and privacy tool, but it takes a little getting used to) and the extension of the Customs safari Plugin. The only problem is, that may interfere with the way the pages themselves.

As the last provisional use privacy protection tool as MacScan to sweep up any extra information system for monitoring (as well as dangerous spyware and Trojan horses).

Flash cookies

Risk: local shared objects are small text files stored in Adobe Flash, which work much like cookies and often avoid another privacy control. They are very common on main pages and often used for tracking.

How to protect yourself: visit the Adobe Flash Settings Manager online limit, as required by Flash LSOs. In the global storage settings on this page, deselect allow third-party Flash content to Store Data on your computer (to get rid of monitoring). Setting allowable storage space to 0 allows you to manually approve new applications for the LSO.

For more control, I recommend Firefox Add-on module BetterPrivacy. This will delete all LSOs when you exit your browser or after a specified time period. Note that if a lot of Flash games, you might want to allow the LSOs for those sites.

Gap Haslam-Ramsey extends into unions of teachers-Chattanooga Times Free Press

NASHVILLE — the gap widened Monday between the Republican Governor Bill Haslam and Republican Senate speaker Ron Ramsey on the prohibition of collective bargaining by teachers even as tea party activists resumed their attacks against the Governor and legislative Republicans who don't back the abrogation.

In a post on his Facebook page, Haslam, who supports a commitment to House about the ability of teachers to bargain with school boards, said Republican and democratic "bipartisan" cooperation in the past year in pursuing changes in State law.

Those enabled Tennessee to qualify for a federal race for $ 500 million to the top grant, Haslam argued in a post borrowed from the Governor's opinion piece, which appeared Sunday in some newspapers in the State.

"Somewhere along the way since then, a partisan tone arose," Haslam, wrote: "there will be differences as the details are worked out, but may not allow the issues that divide us divert the path of reform of education that we are in."

Haslam is pushing for tougher laws for possession of professor and making it easier to create and participate in charter schools. Both accounts are the committees in the House today and Wednesday, respectively.

Ramsey, who is struggling to draw teachers of their collective bargaining rights, subsequently declared analysis Haslam is "misleading a bit" and suggested also the relative inexperience of the Governor, who only took office in January, is coming into play in the Union of teachers.

Republican and democratic legislators last year wanted to race the top changes, which tied reviews student performance to teacher, to "pass on grounds completely different," argued Ramsey.

Republicans voted for it "because they saw it as a real opportunity to change education policy and tie teacher evaluations for testing, something which we promoted for years," he said.

But Democrats voted in favor, Ramsey said, because "it was his friend Governor [Phil Bredesen] proposes it. And paragraph 2, they saw was a way to get $ 500 million of federal money for education. To say that there was a bipartisan cooperation in the race to the top is a little misleading because cooperation was the end result, not the process to get it there. "

With respect to efforts to strip the Tennessee Education Association 52000-member of its collective bargaining rights, Ramsey said that "there is nothing more sacred" to Democrats than "Union".

He said that a "classic" philosophical argument is playing out on "if unions are actually productive for education or an obstacle."

Asked why he thinks Haslam has not joined in, Ramsey said, "that is why I think he's new at work. And he hasn't experienced what I have lived in my 19 years in the legislature. This is not a criticism. This is a fact. I saw teachers ' Union oppose still more common sense reforms, because they saw as a threat. "

Haslam has thrown its support behind the House speaker Beth Harwell, R-Nashville and leaders of the House who improvised a compromise restricting collective bargaining rights of teachers, but not eliminate them entirely.

He did not mention collective bargaining in his op-ed piece, but alluded to it several times, noting that "our local school councils are in a better position to determine how to work with teachers in the basic configuration of remuneration and benefits".

The compromise allows but excludes merit pay and differential wage negotiations.

Also on Monday, leaders of the tea party of Tennessee called on supporters to put pressure on 20 Republicans, they claim they are "waffling" on the Bill on collective bargaining.

They also overflew the Haslam and Harwell, noting in an alert by email/newsletter that Harwell is "in tune with the Governor Haslam, who proved weak in a variety of issues confronting our State.

Tea party leaders of Tennessee said they had been told that 47 House Republicans support a complete ban. The Bill has 50 votes to pass. There are 64 House Republicans, 34 Democrats and one independent. All Democrats appear contrary to the prohibition.

Among those listed as "waffling" were Rep. Richard Floyd, r.-Chattanooga and Rep. Vince Dean, R-East Ridge.

"I don't know where they got their information," said Floyd. "Listen, I support the Senate Bill that is out there."

Dean noted that he is a sponsor of the House version of the Bill.

"They [the tea party leaders] are entitled to their opinions," he said. "As far as I can remember — and I think I would — I haven't cast a vote yet. I don't know how I'm waffling on anything ".
